Live linking was a new feature in Archicad 8, which allowed you to link a View from Archicad directly into Plotmaker.
The disadvantage many people found with live links is that they cannot tell which views have changed, only that the PLN/PLP file has changed. As such, when you open Plotmaker, many files are updated that do not need to be. Publishing PMKs allow the user to control when drawings are updated in Plotmaker.
The disadvantage of PMKs is the administrative and file space requirement, of remembering to publish any time you make changes, You also can see PMKs that are 3 or more times the size of the original PLN file, taking up substantial hard drive space.
The live linking is definitely the Graphisoft preferred method, and is likely to be the continued path of improvement, but many people still use PMKs quite successfully.
