It is not rare that users face the problem that some TIFF images can not be imported into ArchiCAD. TIFF is a very complex industrial format for images and has several subtypes and compression methods. ArchiCAD 7.0 supports a subset of the format according to TIFF Revision 6.0 (Published in June 3, 1992). The TIFF import is Crossplatform in ArchiCAD, so byte order of the other platform can be opened (Windows/IBM PC byte order on the Macintosh and vice versa).
ArchiCAD can read the following types and compression methods:
- Bilevel Images (B/W images)
- Grayscale Images
- Palette-color Images
- RGB Full Color Images
- Alpha Channel Images (32 bit/pixel)
- Tiled Images
- Uncompressed
PackBits Compression
- LZW Compression
- Differencing Predictor (e.g. LZW with prediction)
The below types and compression methods are NOT supported:
- CMYK Images
- YCbCr Images
- CIE L*a*b* Images
- CCITT Bilevel Encodings (1D, Group 3 Fax, Group 4 Fax)
- Modified Huffman Compression
- JPEG Compression
The problem with opening not supported types is more common on the Windows platform because TIFF seems to be far more popular among our Windows users, and ArchiFM (where the usage of scanned floor plans in TIFF format seems common) is a Windows only product.
Please find below a workaround how TIFF files of not supported format can be converted in order to be opened in ArchiCAD smoothly. It is quite easy to check the compression method and change it if necessary.
As a first step please make sure the file is not Read-only. Check its Properties in Explorer. (Select the file and choose the Properties command from the File menu. The check-box should be checked out. Close the dialog.)
- Then start the program Imaging by choosing it from the Start menu/Programs/Accessories.
On Windows 2000 and 98 choose Open Image for Editing from the File menu, while on Windows NT you do not need this extra step.
Note: On Windows XP you have to use other (professional) image-processing software to do this as there's no utility in the system anymore that could complete this task.- Choose Properties from the Page menu and click the Compression tab. On Windows NT use Page/Convert and click the Compression tab.
In the Compression pop-up list choose one from the methods listed above, that can be opened by ArchiCAD. Uncompressed is recommended only if none of the other two are offered in the pop-up list because the file size can be huge.
- Choose Save as from the File menu to save the image under another name in order to differentiate it from the original.
Hint: You can also use the above steps for compressing uncompressed images.
After opened the converted image in ArchiCAD successfully, you might delete the original file in order to save disk space.
There is an alternate solution for the problem for those, who purchased Adobe PhotoShop. Check the file if it is locked or Read-only, and open it in PhotoShop. Use the Save as... command from the File menu (choose the desired byte order) and check "LZW Compression" in.
As already mentioned above, the byte order is not relevant for ArchiCAD, i.e. it can open a file saved with the Macintosh byte order on the Windows and vice versa.
