TechTip of the Month Contest Winner of March 2004:

Erika Epstein's tip on using Publisher to quickly produce whole sets of PDFs of your layouts

"(...) I have loaded AC 8.1 on a new System and have forgotten how on my last system that I was able to Print from PlotMaker to PDF..."

Here's a way to do it: you only need to set up the system once, and you will be able to produce sets of PDFs of your sheets for the copy bureau.

Open your Layout Book in PlotMaker 8.1 and open Publisher. In our example, we already set up a layout book with two different sized layouts:

  1. Create a new View Set by using the New View Set... option from the menu at the top left in the Publisher dialog, and name it i.e. "Publish to PDF" (1.); drag the layouts you want to print to PDF from the left to the right and then click on View Set Publishing Properties... (2.) and select Print as the publishing method. After closing this dialog the publisher should look similar to the image below:

  2. Now the publishing set is set up. Click on the Layout Book line below to make it selected. Two of the three buttons below will become active: Print Setup... and Print Settings... - changes made in these dialogs will affect all Views in the Layout Book.

  3. First, open the Print Setup... dialog. Here, select Amyuni PDF Converter as the Printer (if you have other PDF printer drivers installed, of course you are free to select them as well).

Hint: in our example we named all views according to their content and sheets used. I.e. Ground floor A3 LS means the sheet size is A3, orientation is landscape. If most of the layouts in your book use the same sheet size and/or orientation, it is worthwhile to select the appropriate settings here, since later only the different sheet's Print Setup... will have to be set up separately. Of course, changing these settings here overrides the settings of the separate layouts, so be careful.

  4. Now open the Print Settings... dialog, with still the Layout Book active in the tree displayed above, and choose the appropriate options. Most probably the only option used here when printing to PDF will be the Print Quality option; please note that the very same option is available through the Properties... of the printer selected in the Print Options... dialog.
Hint: You can find many useful options in the Properties... of the Amyuni PDF driver like adding watermarks to the document, copy-protection of the document produced etc.
To save the settings from this dialog click on the Print button (of course no print process will be started as yet).

  5. Now in the tree above, select each layout (view) one by one, and set the options mentioned before differently where needed. Also, by clicking on the layouts (views) one by one, the Print Options... button will be activated, where you can set the scale and other options (anchor point!) of each layout. In our example we selected to use the margins of the device:

  6. After having done this for each layout, choose Save Settings & Close. This will save the publishing information defined in this set so that any time to wish to publish it you'll only have to click on the Publish button... :o)

Hint: In our example we used the following settings with the Amyuni driver: Under Properties..., select the Destination tab page and choose:
