"You don't need an image application to convert images from one format to another. ArchiCAD has the capability built in.

Converting images from one format to another
Open the picture you want to convert: double-click on the Picture (Image) tool in ArchiCAD, then click on Open... and select the file you want to save as a different format.
In the Picture Tool, a preview of the picture will appear. Below it, in the Image format section of the dialog select the format you want the file to be saved in, then click on Save as... to specify the location of the new file.
Hint: After selecting a placed drawing on the floor plan, you can change the format that it's stored in the .PLN file itself by simply choosing a format in the same menu then closing the dialog with OK. When saving the file anew, the placed image will be saved into the PLN in the chosen format.
Cropping images in ArchiCAD
Go to the File menu, choose Open and select for Files of Type "All Images." ArchiCAD will open any file format that it supports. It even supports the Multi-Layer Photoshop format: .PSD and it also supports Multi-Layered .TIFs.
See all image formats supported by ArchiCAD 8 here.
Furthermore you can use the marquee tool to paste a cropped image into your open drawing. With your ArchiCAD project file open, go to the File/Open dialog. Change your Files of Type selection to "All Images" and open your image. Use the Marquee Tool to select the portions of the image you want to copy. Press copy that portion of the image to the clipboard (Ctrl+C/Windows or Cmd+C/Mac OS X). Close the image file and paste (Ctrl+V or Cmd+V). You will see the image display in ArchiCAD. Treat it just like any other image. Adjust the DPI and stretch it however you need.
