• Background ArchiCAD does not start on Windows

In rare cases it can happen that the BackgroundArchicad application does not start when PlotMaker trying to run it to update drawings placed in PlotMaker. This is the technical background of it:

The starting of Background ArchiCAD is done through the OLE mechanism of Windows. When ArchiCAD is installed as well as when ArchiCAD is started, it creates an Entry in the Registry. This entry is not created in the usual HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/GRAPHISOFT/ArchiCAD... folder, but some other folder of the Registry related to OLE. The entry is created either during installation or when ArchiCAD is first started. However, these entries can be made only if the current user has administrator rights. There are separate entries for ArchiCAD 8 and 8.1, so there is no danger of these two getting mixed up. In theory, these rights are provided in case of a correct ArchiCAD installation.

So if Background ArchiCAD does not start, it is because the entry does not exist in the Registry. This can happen only if ArchiCAD was not installed correctly. This comes about when the ArchiCAD package was not installed, but copied to its current location, plus the current user does not have administrator rights. Normal ArchiCAD installation requires administrator rights, in which case the OLE entry will also be created without problem in the Registry. If the current user does not have administrator rights, it is again not possible to make the Registry entry when ArchiCAD is started.

When PlotMaker cannot start Background ArchiCAD, the following error message appears: 'Error while starting ArchiCAD in the background.'

So, the ArchiCAD package should be reinstalled with administrator rights. This should take care of the problem.
